OLATHE-(July 1, 2014) For fans of Olathe Sweet sweet corn, the annual celebration of the tasty treat– the Olathe Sweet Corn Festival–will be held Aug. 2, from 9 a.m.-7:30 p.m. at Olathe Community Park, 1 Park Place in Olathe.
“The Olathe Sweet Corn Festival is a family-friendly event that focuses on agriculture and community,” said Jeff Bachman, the Olathe Sweet Corn Festival board chair/president. “We have a line-up of great local entertainment, games for the kids, food and craft vendors, and all the great Olathe Sweet Corn you can eat.”
Held annually during the first weekend in August, the Festival first began in 1992 to celebrate the Olathe Sweet sweet corn and the tremendous benefit it has been to the local agricultural community. The festival has continued to attract thousands of people over the years, making it one of the highlights for Olathe and the surrounding region.
“The goal of the festival is to bring the community together to celebrate our heritage in agriculture and, of course, to enjoy some of our great Sweet Corn and our local entertainers,” Bachman explained. “Our hope is that the local community will benefit financially and will pull together as a community to put on another great event.”
One of the best and most famous parts of the festival is that once people pay for admission, they can indulge in all-you-can-eat hot buttered sweet corn for free. Other food vendors serve classic carnival foods such as corn dogs and ice cream.
The festival is packed with family-friendly events, including carnival rides, kids’ games and activities, craft vendors to check out, and great live entertainment to enjoy. “We have several new bands playing with a wide variety of musical talent,” Bachman said. “We are working on some Friday night events as well as a parade and 5K Run.”
With so many activities and events over the day to pick from, Bachman chose a couple favorites that he enjoys the most. “I am excited to hear the new bands that will be playing this year,” he said. “It’s always a great family fun day with all the sweet corn we can eat. Plus, the Sweet Corn Eating Contest is always a blast!”
For people who would like to help out, volunteers are always welcome to help in a variety of capacities. “We can always use additional volunteers to make this event a success,” Bachman said. “If you would like to be involved in the Festival you can go to our website for more information on how to get involved.”
As a word to the local community, Bachman said, “Thank you for all your help and we look forward seeing a crowd again this year.”
