MONTROSE–(Jul1y1, 2014) Those who like it hot are ready not only for summer’s heat, but for the arrival of green chile season, and the irresistible aroma of chiles roasting outdoors at local farm markets. However, while you wait, Montrose also offers other options for those who like adding a little “heat” to their culinary choices.
One of our favorites is Ah Chihuahua at 235 North First Street. While Montrose has a host of excellent Mexican eateries, this one stands out for a unique combination of freshness, affordability and cold seafood cocktails that bring a snap of crunch and freshness to a hot July day. And if nothing cools you like a touch of heat, Ah Chihuahua is sure to please with an extra spicy salsa option. Open seven days a week, Ah Chihuahua can be reached at 970-240-2721.
Another longtime local favorite, Asii Thai, recently closed its doors. Fortunately, the restaurant is now owned by Chang Thai Cuisine, and offers new menu options and friendly service that includes former Asii owner Patcharin Lawler. Located at 1015 South Townsend, Chang is operated by a group of friends who got their start in Glenwood Springs, and who share a passion for authentic Thai food and culture. The restaurant re-opened to the public on June 23 and has already drawn an appreciative local clientele. Menu items can be ordered in mild, medium or spicy hot, and many can be made vegetarian or gluten free. To reach Changs call 970-240-4567.
And of course, we have mentioned them before–but we can’t get enough of Menudo’s, at 110 North Townsend. What sets this place apart are not only mild to hot options, but amazingly fast service for food that is homemade and delicious. Pull up to the outside burrito stand for a speedy and delicious $2 breakfast that gets your day off to the right start every time. Menudo’s is open six days a week (closed Sundays) until 2 p.m.
Finally, want a quick meal, fresh meal that will feed the whole family, with a variety of fresh salsas and heat options? Stop by El Pollo Asado at 633 South Townsend Avenue, where the service is always friendly, and the food is always fresh, delicious and affordable. Though they specialize in flame-grilled chicken and fresh tortillas, El Pollo Azado has added new menu options in recent years, in keeping with the emphasis on simple but fresh. Call them at 970-249-0616. El Pollo Azado is open for lunch and dinner.
