(MONTROSE, 11/20/12)—No, you can’t drive a golf cart over Vail Pass. But cart-riding residents of Cedaredge, Olathe, Ouray and Ridgway are free to jump in and head on out wherever the spirit moves them—because in those municipalities, local ordinances have been passed allowing carts to share the roads.

“Cedaredge is probably the most golf-friendly community around,” said P.J. Robinson, whose family owns and operates Robinson Golf Cars (3060 Aerotech) of Montrose. “But golf carts are also very popular with farmers and ranchers—why fire up the truck, when you can hop in the cart and head down to the mailbox or over to the barn?”

Just about the only place that Robinson Golf Cars does not sell carts is to area golf courses—as the certified local dealer for EZ-G0, they are licensed to sell to only to other users. Still, business couldn’t be better for this family-owned business, founded in 1989 and located in Montrose for the past seven years. Robinson sells not only new golf and utility carts, but carries an inventory of pre-owned carts as well.

“We sell a good number of golf carts, and we sell to the whole Western Slope,” Robinson said. “Carts and utility carts are popular with hotels too—it’s so easy to hop in, push the pedal and go.”

Perhaps a cart could be the perfect option for that hard-to-buy-for person on your list; although Robinson Golf Carts is open year round, there tends to be less demand during the colder months.

“Christmas is kind of slow for us,” Robinson said. “But we’re busy as can be in the summer!”
