(MONTROSE, 11/20/12)—He has spent 20 of his 44 years in the restaurant business, managing bars and high-end establishments across the U.S., from steakhouses on the East Coast to casinos in South Dakota. He has lived in more than 38 states. So when Scott Voorhis decided to open a restaurant of his own, he knew exactly where he wanted to go.
“My wife’s family is here,” said Voorhis. “She grew up here; her parents are Dr. Tom and Linda Canfield. And I lived here in the 1970’s.”
While living and working in Denver years ago, the young couple ate at Heidi’s Brooklyn Deli at least once a week, Voorhis said. So when they decided to return to Montrose, opening a Heidi’s franchise was a logical choice.
“We knew that my wife could work at the hospital,” Voorhis said. “But I wanted a job. So we decided to open a Heidi’s Deli here.”
Today, Heidi’s Brooklyn Deli is one of a number of popular south side Montrose eateries, serving locals as well as those en route to other destinations.
“We’re the first place you see on the way in, and the last place on your way out,” Voorhis said. “We bake everything from scratch, and everything is fresh. We have great desserts, and we deliver.”
Heidi’s has no specific clientele, because the menu offers 40 different sandwiches, four soups, and seven salads.
“We see everybody here,” Voorhis said, “tourists and locals, young and old. It has been a decent year.”
And after five years of serving breakfast and lunch in Montrose, Scott is just happy to be here, with his wife and children.
“We have four kids in the public schools, and we spend our money here,” he said. “We are local, a Montrose family.”
The popular Wednesday morning coffee hour continues at Heidi’s, with interesting presentations scheduled most weeks from 8 to 9 a.m. The deli (1521 Oxbow Drive) is open seven days a week, from 6:30 to 4 p.m. daily Oct.-April and from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. daily May-Sept. The phone number is 970-240-2044.
